Core Beliefs

The sole basis for our belief is the Bible, which is uniquely God-inspired, without error, and the final authority on all matters on which it speaks.

As the Bible teaches, there is one God, eternally existing in three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - each possessing all the attributes of deity.

God created humans to have fellowship with Him, but they defied God by sinfully going their own way. As a result, we need God’s saving grace to end our alienation from Him. Salvation comes only through God’s grace - not human effort - and must be received personally by repentance and faith.

Jesus Christ, second Person of the Trinity, lived a sinless life on earth and voluntarily paid for our sin by dying on the cross as our substitute. This accomplished salvation for all who receive grace by trusting in Him alone. He rose from the dead and is the only mediator between God and us. He baptizes believers in the Holy Spirit. He will return to earth to consummate history.

The Holy Spirit draws sinners to Christ and equips believers for personal growth and service to the church. The church’s role is to glorify God and serve those in need. At the end, everyone will experience bodily resurrection and the judgment. Only believers will enjoy eternal fellowship with God.

Hope Story: (How/why you ended up at Hope Church) I could write a book but I'll keep it short. Hope Church is the convergence of many streams in my life. From 1989 - 2005, I had served as the senior pastor in existing churches, most recently at United Faith in South Charlotte. I have spent the last three years ministering in and consulting with churches throughout North Carolina. Each week, I was confronted with the challenge of many existing churches to connect the hope-giving message of Jesus Christ to their communities. During this three year journey, I struggled with the sense that I was functioning outside of my pastoral calling to the local church. At the funeral of a great hero in ministry, I sensed the Lord open the door for me to reenter pastoral ministry. One problem, I didn't want to leave North Carolina and honestly did not want to serve as pastor of an existing church. Through much prayer and many discussions with my friend, Sam Farina and the leaders of the Association of Related Churches, the Lord placed the vision of Hope Church in my heart. I want to spend the best years of my ministry building a church in a city that I love that will win souls and challenge Christ-followers to live out this abundant life that the Lord has given us. At my stage of life and ministry, there are many options that I could pursue, but only one is God's will for me and my family, Hope Church.

Previous line of work: Before beginning pastoral ministry in 1989, I was a CPA with Arthur Andersen & Co based out of Houston, TX and Charlotte, NC

Least favorite sports team: College: Tie between University of Texas and Notre Dame. Professional: any team from Atlanta

Favorite movie: We Were Soldiers and Gladiator

Favorite fiction book: The Firm by John Grisham

Favorite restaurant: Bistro 100, uptown Charlotte

Craziest (legal) thing you've ever done: Ate a meal prepared by a street vendor in New Delhi, India (against my better judgment) and lived to talk about it.

Interesting fact that most wouldn't know about you or your family: Grew up in small town Texas as the son of the town veterinarian: rodeos, cows, the whole nine yards

What would you hope to have written on your gravestone (your epitaph) to summarize your life's purpose? He Loved God, Loved His Family, and Gave His Best

Testimony: (your personal story of how you came to Christ): I grew up in a Christian family and confessed Christ as Savior as a child. My relationship with the Lord became real to me as I began understanding the power of God's grace in my teen years. For me, the struggle was to move from cultural, family faith to personal faith in the love of God.

Hope Story:Its funny how God takes us on a journey! Sometimes he lay’s the plan right out for us and sometimes he just asks us to trust Him. In August of 2009, I met with Pastor Mike to talk about an opportunity to help out with worship at Hope. I had just moved back to Charlotte from Florida and thought it would be temporary as I was looking for a full-time worship position at a church. When we talked the first time I really felt like God was drawing me to Hope even though I really was looking for a full- time position just graduating from college. Pastor Mikes vision was incredible and we loved the passion he had for people to experience God in a life changing way. We also loved the vision of giving people Hope. There are so many people today who are hurting and need Hope in their lives and Christ is the only way who can truly provide that. My wife Brittni and I began to seek God for direction in our lives and we both felt like God kept on saying we were suppose to be at Hope. The next Sunday we went to a service at Hope and the whole time we sensed God’s presence and just felt like it was home for us. We committed to begin this journey with Pastor mike of giving people Hope through Jesus Christ in the Mallard Creek community. Being a part of a church plant has been quite a journey! And God still hasn’t shown us the last phase of this journey, but little by little, and piece by piece, God is showing us new things about this journey and we are just so excited to be apart of such an amazing church!

Previous line of work:I was the Worship Pastor for a church in Central Florida called Bartow First Assembly of God. I worked full time as well was a full time Student at Southeastern University in Lakeland Florida.

Hobbies: Anything having to do with music! I also love all sports.

Favorite sports team:New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and UNC Tar Heels

Least favorite sports team:Any New York Teams!

Favorite movie: Gladiator

Favorite fiction book:A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards

Favorite restaurant: Carrabas, and Chilis

Craziest (legal) thing you've ever done:tried to go down a hill on a 4 wheeler that was WAY to steep for this amature! I ended up flipping the 4-wheeler and it rolled right over me but I wasn’t hurt at all!

Interesting fact that most wouldn't know about you or your family: I am missing 1/3 of my pointer finger on my right hand.

What would you hope to have written on your gravestone (your epitaph) to summarize your life's purpose?Served Christ with his whole life, loved his family, and loved people.

Testimony:I was born in a Christian home and was taught about Christ as a young Child. I asked Jesus to come into my heart at a young age at a Backyard Bible School but didn’t truly understand what that meant. My family moved to North Carolina when I was 12 and got involved with a great church in South Charlotte. As I entered my teen years I distanced myself from God. In February of 2002 I went to the East Coast Youth Conference held in Charlotte and gave my life to Christ. I had an encounter with God that I could not deny. I had leaned my whole life what it was to be a Christian but it was the experience of encountering God, feeling his presence, and hearing his voice, that changed my life forever. It was that day that I surrendered my life to God and felt the call of ministry on my life.

Hope Story: I graduated from Calvary Orlando Master's Commission in the summer of '08. It was there that God placed inside of me a passion for Church planting, sharpened my gifts and talents, and showed me what it truly means to lead others. David Docusen, my mentor and friend, who served on the Hope Church staff in its first year in existence, connected me to Pastor Mike and the team a month before our launch in September of that year. I came to Charlotte with the sole intention of educating myself, that is, in learning hands-on how to plant a Church. The six months I committed soon turned into eight, then ten, and a year later I joined the Hope Team with the intention of staying long-term. With the help of others, I started a youth ministry here at Hope where I fell in love with a distinct group of young people that have impacted my life. I've also fallen in love with the city of Charlotte, and I'm desperate to take the good news to every inch of this city.

Previous line of work: I graduated High School in 2007. During those years, I worked on farms, in offices, on constructions sites, and in numerous restaraunts. You name it, I did it.

Hobbies: Anything with any element of adventure. Hiking, hunting, camping, fishing, rock climbing, canoeoing, white-water rafting, traveling, etc...

Favorite sports teams: Ohio State Buckeyes, Detroit Red Wings.

Least favorite sports team: Any SEC Football team (previous seasons should explain why).

Favorite movie: It's A Wonderful Life

Favorite fiction book: The Adventures Tom Sawyer

Favorite restaurant:  PF Changs, Sticky Fingers, Olive Garden, and The Eaton Place (a sweet little "story-book" type diner in my small hometown).

Craziest (legal) thing you've ever done: I once delivered a baby Alpaca...eeh.

Interesting fact that most wouldn't know about you or your family: There is in fact a Shope Farm. My family raises cows and chickens. My previous visit to the farm entailed me naming one of our new hens, her name: Zaxby (a fried chicken restaraunt chain here in the south).

What would you hope to have written on your gravestone (your epitaph) to summarize your life's purpose? His life is in Christ; his family is his legacy; his memory is our benchmark.

Testimony: I was born in a Christian home and received Christ as my savior at a young age. Though I've had my struggles with faith and salvation, God has always been graceful and I thank him for his faithfulness.
